Jeep plows into Amish buggy

The sound of impact ripped through the dark Indiana countryside.

In seconds, a peaceful Amish buggy ride became a nightmare of twisted wood, screams, and flashing sirens.

Children were hurt.

A father was airlifted. A Jeep sat crumpled in a ditch.

On a calm October night near Berne, a horse-drawn Amish buggy carrying nine people was struck from behind by a Jeep on State Road 218, turning a routine ride into a desperate struggle for survival.

The buggy splintered across the pavement, throwing nearly everyone to the ground.

Seven occupants, including multiple children, were rushed to area hospitals; the driver was flown out by medical helicopter as first responders fought the clock in a scene lit only by emergency strobes and rural darkness.

In the days that follow, the Adams County Amish community will quietly do what it always does: gather, pray, bring food, offer rides, sit at hospital bedsides.

Neighbors will step in to handle chores and farm work while the family heals.

And along that same narrow highway, every driver who passes a buggy will be reminded how one moment of inattention can change an entire family’s future.
